YOUR DENTAL HEALTH Brighter and Whiter By Dr. Jesh A perfect smile is a difficult thing to quantify. Is it the whiteness of the teeth or how straight the teeth are in relation to each Dr. Jesh Tse other? Cosmetic dentistry has grown in leaps and bounds in the last few years, everything from laser whitening to invisible braces have been ereated to meet the demand for a beautiful smile. l'd have to say, however, that the most beautiful smile is the one that is used often and without reservation. As a dentist, I am often asked about what I can do to improve a smile, and truthfully, we can make things whiter, straighter, and smoother, but I think the most important thing we do is to make a person more confident in their smile. Minor misalignments can actually provide character, individuality to a smile and not everything requires correction, but for those of you looking for a solution to a problem with the way your teeth look, we can help. In the next few months, I'll attempt to touch on some new technology that we have available that can help with creating a dazzling smile. Almost everyone would like a whiter smile. Teeth tend to darken due to stain accumulated over time. The best way to achieve a whiter smile: Keep your teeth clean. Regular oral hygiene and maintenance will ensure that your teeth are both healthy and white. For those of us that would like their smile a little brighter, there are several whitening options. Bleaching kits, utilizing custom made trays, can be fabricated for your teeth which hold a whitening gel in close contact with your tooth structure to remove stain. These are a great option and in order to do additional whitening treatments, only new gel needs to be purchased. In essence, tray whitening is very similar to the strip whitening systems found in various stores, save that the concentration of ingredients is much higher and the fit and comfort of the system is improved due to the custom fit trays. The downside to this method of whitening is the sensitivity that is created as a result of releasing the stain. However, most often, simply stopping usage of the trays will result in reversal of the sensitivity. In office whitening solutions are also available. "Laser" Whitening has become very popular due to how quickly results can be achieved. Rather than having repeated daily treatments over the course of a couple weeks, the same if not brighter results can be achieved within a single visit to the dental office. The major downside to this system was the sensitivity following treatment. The same sensitivity that would be generated over multiple treatments in the tray method, were suddenly compressed into a single treatment resulting in sometimes very painful, albeit bright, results. Still, no pain no gain, right? Well, not exactly. Recently new alterations to the whitening formula have vastly improved this single detrimental aspect of in office whitening. Our office now carries a new system that not only achieves great results, but also does this almost free of any sensitivity, both during and after. For more information on whitening or to see if one of our technologies is right for you, call us or come in for an appointment and we'll see you one step closer to a winning smile.
